Computer and Server Energy Efficiency Standards/ Labeling Workshop

(November 2009) With the support and coordination of CLASP, CSEP and LBNL, CNIS recently hosted a workshop on Computers and Servers in Beijing, with attendees from India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency, the US's Energy Star, and the European Commission.

In this first meeting of its kind, participants discussed the potential for harmonization of test procedures and/or MEPS for computers and servers.  The European Commission has aligned its MEPS to Energy Star requirements for computers.  Additionally, the United States is the only the player at the table with a voluntary label already in place for servers, while other participants had plans to initiate MEPS for servers.

All participants of the meeting were able to reach consensus on important issues.  Some very notable outcomes of the meeting are:

  • The group decided to move toward aligned test procedures for computers.  In order to make this happen, CLASP will circulate and provide training on the Energy Star test procedure to other countrys technical and policy experts as needed, and host additional meetings in the future.
  • The group also decided to work on aligned test procedures for servers, pending the availability of free testing software
  • For both computers and servers, CLASP will work with each country individually on MEPS, considering country specifications.
  • It was agreed that CLASP will draft a letter that China, India, the EU, and the US will send to manufacturers in order to inform them that these countries have agreed to work together on MEPS requirements, and to invite the manufacturers to participate in this global collaboration.
  • CLASP will serve as a secretariat for all of these activities, providing technical support and analysis where needed and as requested.
