Communities of Practice webinar: Ecosystem service mapping for planning

On 5 February 2025, an online multi-lateral CoP webinar and workshop on ‘Ecosystem service mapping for planning’ was jointly arranged by SELINA and REPLAN, to share experiences and perspectives on the subject among three countries: Sweden, Slovenia and Norway.

The demand for assessing and mapping ecosystem services is rising to support planning and decision-making. However, challenges remain in selecting methodologies, meeting decision-makers' needs, and translating results into actions. Overcoming these issues relies on sharing experiences between experts and end-users. The aim of the webinar and workshop was to discuss needs and challenges for integrating and promoting ecosystem services in planning and other decision-making, and to share experiences across countries and scales.

The programme included a welcome and introduction to SELINA and REPLAN by Ulla Mörtberg (KTH), followed by presentations on ecosystem service mapping for municipal planning by Nicole Lindsö (SEPA), Anna Maria Larsson (Ekologigruppen) and Magnus Tuvendal (Calluna). The session continued with presentations from Henrike Forsberg Mathiesen (NIBIO), who spoke about ‘Thematic ecosystem services maps for spatial planning, with examples from 16 Norwegian municipalities’, followed by Špela Gale (Statistics Slovenia) sharing information on the ‘Development of ecosystem accounts in Slovenia as a database for future spatial planning'.

The webinar encouraged group discussions on municipal ecosystem service planning, challenges and solutions for assessing and mapping ecosystem services, and using ecosystem service accounting in decision-making.
