The 6th KAEPP Seminar, Ecosystem Services – Challenges of Valuation and Implications for Decision-Making, was held on 10 April 2026 at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in a hybrid format.

The seminar explored approaches to identifying, assessing, mapping and valuing ecosystem services, with a focus on their role in environmental, agricultural and spatial planning. 

It offered an opportunity to discuss how SELINA approaches and outputs could be applied in Slovenia and to strengthen cooperation between ZRC SAZU and the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana.

Examples and research findings from SELINA were showcased, including the Slovenian Community of Practice, the Terms of Reference web tool, Lines of Integration, the assessment of carbon sequestration at the Triglav National Park test site, and selected published research. Particular attention focused on translating ecosystem services knowledge into practical information to support decision-makers and other interested groups.

Using practical examples, maps, classifications and case studies, the seminar demonstrated how ecosystem services approaches can be applied and reused in different contexts.

It contributed to a better understanding of why nature’s contributions should be considered in decisions affecting land use, biodiversity and human well-being. Questions and discussion showed interest in applying this knowledge in research and decision-making, while highlighting the challenges of translating assessments into practice.
